If done properly, chestnuts can be stored in your refrigerator for several months. Chestnuts will dry rapidly in dry air and will mold rapidly in damp air. Keep in mind that chestnuts are more like a fruit and should be stored in many of the same ways.
For refrigerator storage, first place the chestnuts in a closed paper sack or box and leave for 1 to 2 days until they have reached refrigerator temperature. You may then transfer them to a sealed plastic sack for longer storage times.
We generally like to bring them out the day before roasting or baking so they can be at room temperature before cooking. A minimum of 3 to 4 hours before use will work, but we do not recommend going directly from fridge to oven or grill. |
